Haydn nicknamed his 94th Symphony 'Surprise' for the sudden fortissimo chord designed to wake drowsy concertgoers — but the gentle Andante theme itself is pure, singable simplicity. On a steel tongue drum it becomes a calm, flowing melody ideal for beginners, with its stepwise motion highlighting the instrument's even, mellow tone across every note.
